The Derby is coming to town! Clear your plans for Saturday afternoon and head to Northlands where you can become enjoy food, drink and friends during an afternoon at the races.
It’s the biggest event in Western Canadian racing—a thrilling afternoon where the past and present collide. A day of glamour and action, filled with history and tradition. Celebrate the 88th and Final running of the Canadian Derby this August 19 at Northlands Park Racetrack & Casino and be part of history.
But wait? What is a Derby?
A derby is a race where only three-year-old horses can compete. There will be a series of 11 races beginning at noon. The Canadian Derby is the final race of the day and will run at approximately 6:10 p.m. It’s a thrilling one and three eighths mile that takes approximately two and a half minutes to run.
How to Watch the Derby
The Grandstand | With tickets starting at $15/seat, the Grandstand gets you in on the action, while still being a wallet friendly day out at the Derby.
The Palm Bay Party Zone | See the race where the action really takes an exciting turn. The Palm Bay Party Zone is located on the tarmac and located at the first turn of the track. Tickets are $60 and include a burger and chips, picnic table seating, private bar and a commemorative Derby chair.
The VIP Infield Experience | Splurge for the VIP Experience at $125/ticket. You’ll find fun and glamour in a Hamptons’ style atmosphere with an upscale VIP buffet in the infield tent. Included is a racing program, and a great view of the track.
Dressing for the Derby
Women // bold and pastel coloured dresses and suits serve as traditional Derby day attire. Hats and fascinators are considered an essential part of the ensemble and high heels are always a stylish way to complete your outfit (but it’s always a good idea to pack a comfortable pair of shoes).
Men // To obtain that ideal derby look, we recommend light summer suits and sport coats, khakis or dress pants, light-colored shirts and smart, colourful neck or bow ties. Hats are key to finishing off the look.
