January 27 | DIY Wallpaper
See the work of Yvonne Mallock and Teng Teng Chong, and then experiment with pattern, repetition and colour to create your own personalized wallpaper on fabric. Mount your final composition on display board for easy installation at home.
February 3 | Mask Making
Explore emotion and mood in our exhibition Living, Building, Thinking: Art & Expressionism, then head to the studio to design a mask in plaster and clay. Experiment with additive and subtractive techniques before casting your final project.
February 10 | Environmental Art
View Sean Caufield’s The Flood in Manning Hall and discuss the relationship of art and ecology. Later, head to the studio for an introduction to relief printing including how to carve a lino block, ink and print layers, and edition multiple prints.
February 17 | Landscape Sketch
Get inspired by Canadian icons Tom Thompson and the Group of Seven before sketching and painting your own landscape. Experiment with watercolour, ink and gouache and a variety of techniques to create a unique impression. Feel free to bring along an image to work from or use the photographs and magazines supplied.
February 24 | Art Journals
Record, sketch, and capture the world around you in a book made by you! Learn the basics of book binding from simple stitches to assembling a block. Create your own front and back covers to complete your personalized art journal.
March 2 | Figurative Drawing
This intro class to figurative drawing uses charcoal, inks and conté as you sketch from a live model. Study drawing fundamentals such as tone, line, proportion and perspective and then, work on gesture and balance to explore the anatomy of the human form.
Note: This class will include a nude model and will begin promptly at 7 pm.
March 9 | Abstract Watercolours
Look to the work of Alex Janvier in 7: Professional Native Indian Artists Inc. and create a series of experimental watercolour studies using a variety of washes, blends and resist techniques. Apply these 2D basics in new and creative ways!
March 16 | The Great Tape Scape
Work independently or collaboratively in-studio and transform the space by creating a series of large-scale installation works using only coloured tape as your drawing tools.
March 16 | Painted Portraits
“Paint Only” in this class! Use acrylic paint to create a portrait using shape and tone. Play with viscosity and application on canvas using brushes, sponges, palette knives and more!
March 23 | Conceptual Design
Get conceptual and solve a design problem! Work from a set of ‘directions’ to create a unique solution to a common design challenge. Compare your finished work with one another to see how the concept was interpreted by individual artists/designers.
March 30 | Wilderness in Relief
Take inspiration from the featured artwork in Out of the Woods: Tom Thompson and the Group of Seven before molding, modelling and sculpting a landscape in low relief.
