See The Rivery Valley on a Segway Tour

Edmonton’s river valley offers an abundance of unique date options – a quiet walk through one of the 20-plus parks, paddling down the North Saskatchewan in a canoe or mountain biking on one of the many dirt paths that carve through the urban forest. There’s also a slightly less conventional option thanks to River Valley Adventure Co. – the Segway.

Tucked into the hillside at downtown’s Louise McKinney Park, the company has been offering tours on the two-wheeled electrical transporters, among many other activities, for the past four years. We recently got the chance to go for a romantic Segway tour for two on an unseasonably summer-like May evening.

Our tour guide for the evening, Chloe, was energetic and full of enthusiasm for Segwaying and the city we call home. After we watched a safety video, Chloe spent about 15 minutes teaching us how to safely maneuver the vehicles. Setting a Segway into motion requires only the slightest shifts in body weight, and moves forwards, backwards and turns at the gentlest movement. Once we were comfortable, we set off on the promenade alongside the river and took a moment to appreciate the views and the wonderful weather.

We then rolled over the Cloverdale Bridge and onto the tree-lined trails of the southern bank. At first, we stuck to the blacktop multi-use trail, but once we got comfortable with the unusual controls, Chloe suggested we take the Segways for a spin on the unpaved paths through the trees. The Segways handled the off-road terrain easily and our excursion led us to Lover’s Paradise, a lookout point perched on the river’s edge with a perfect view of the downtown skyline and a sun slowly lowering itself to the horizon.

From seeing a character from one of our favourite TV shows riding a Segway to real-life police officers patrolling on them, we’ve always wondered what it would be like to try one of the quirky vehicles for ourselves. It was great to finally experience first hand, and was the perfect, quirky date night in Edmonton’s beautiful river valley.

Segway tours are offered year-round and start at $59 per person for a one-hour tour. They also offer 30-minute clinics and 90-minute excursions.
