This weekend, we took in a surfing lesson, in Edmonton. Yup, you heard that right – we surfed in our great city.
We showed up bright and early on a Saturday morning to the World Waterpark at West Edmonton Mall, for a lesson in surfing. Welcomed by the friendly instructors (there’s two of them), the class was perfectly sized, at about ten people.
We were given introductory lesson on how to get up on the board that led us to the water, where we paddled out to catch our first wave. Plenty of waves to catch, it was a great workout for your arms and your core. There wasn’t a moment where we were bored, or felt like weren’t getting enough time on the waves.
Everyone in the lesson was able to get up on the board and if needed, the friendly instructors were there to give you feedback, and helpful tips in between each run. One of the coolest parts of the surf lesson was getting to go past the usually-off-limits, ‘behind the rope’ to catch the waves.
Where else in Alberta can you say that you were surfing on a Saturday morning? The best part? Once you take the lesson, you can drop in twice a week to take part in a surfing drop in, after the Waterpark has closed.

Once you finish the initial surfing lesson ($79), you can drop in on Monday and Wednesday evenings a half hour after the water park closes. Drop-in times are 90 minutes, and no pre-booking is required.
Tip: Think you’re going to like it? Instead of the drop in surfing rate ($30), you can buy a six-use punch pass for $145.
If you’re searching for a way to mix up getting active, or a chance to try something new every now and then – or an alternative to lap swimming at the local pool – you’ve got to give this a try!
