5 Alberta Winter Festivals to Explore this Month

Winter Festival season is here and it’s a great excuse to head out of town for the weekend, or for the day, if you’re up for a day-long road trip! Here are five festivals in Alberta this month you can discover and have a datecation.

Deep Freeze: A Byzantine Winter Fête | Jan 14-23

Bring your date and spark your wonder at the gallery of lights, culture and beauty. While walking through Borden Park you will see ice sculptures of lanterns and several different creatures. You can learn about the folklore of the Ukrainian, Francophone, Indigenous, Inuit and Métis cultures through art installations, featuring world-renowned Edmonton Artists.

Lake Louise Ice Magic Festival | Jan 19-30

The Ice Magic festival is located in the beautiful surroundings of Lake Louis. With ice artists from around the world, the festival is a master class in ice carving beauty and the gruelling physicality. From January 16-18 you can watch the artist perform or you can marvel at the finished sculptures till January 27th. Its free to attend Ice Magic Monday-Friday and on the weekends before 10 a.m. or after 5:30 p.m. While you are there go for a skate on the lake and grab some hot coco. Its a great low key and low crowd experience.

Boardwalk Ice on Whyte | Jan 27-Feb 6

Boardwalk Ice on Whyte located in Old Strathcona is a local gem in Edmonton. Experience the ice caving festival and enjoy food, beverages, ice carving lessons and special activities. The local experience also has one of the more affordable cost admission rates.

Jasper in January | Jan 14-30

Jasper in January is two full weeks of fun to get you out of town. From January 10 to January 30,  you can get great deals on places to stay and ski packages. While there you can join in on the fun at the kick-off party or experience the street festival or fireworks. Mountain Park Lodge's Chili Cook-off is one activity not to be missed. Many of the events are free to take part in, so dress warmly and head to the mountains this January.
