Best Edmonton Brunches: May

May describes itself as serving up Edmonton-inspired food to share with the people you love - and they nailed it. Around us, brunch guests were sharing bites of their meals, with bursts of ‘you have to try this’. If you’ve tried the brunch at May, you’ll know - if you haven’t - you’ll get it.

For brunch, we shared three options between three of us, enjoying (and devouring) each flavourful bite. I was excited about this one, particularly, as I had been here the week before, without my partner. The week before, I devoured the milk bread French toast - and couldn’t wait for my partner to try it! I love when that happens, when there is a dish so delicious that you’ve tried, but now get to experience with someone special to you.

What we ate: lemon ricotta pancakes, milk bread French toast, farmer’s breakfast

There’s a dish that caught my eye the first time I visited May for brunch, and one dish I couldn’t stop thinking about, a week later: milk bread French toast. The generous serving of French toast is served with fried chicken - juicy, delicious, perfectly fried chicken. Hot sauce, whipped cream and fluffy milk bread French toast make this for a standout dish - a dish that will make you swear off chicken and waffles from your first bite.

Lemon ricotta pancakes are cake-like and delicious, and pack a bite full of lemon. Delicious. Biased, because lemon ricotta pancakes are one of my favourite brunch dishes - these pancakes were a marriage of brunch and dessert.

The Farmer’s breakfast is generous, and potatoes, seasoned deliciously. What set this one apart is the generous portion of sausage served up beside the well-cooked eggs (we opted for scrambled) and the hearty sourdough toast. Toast isn’t usually something that I think about after breakfast, but this sourdough loaf, slathered in the just-right-amount-of-butter, needed nothing on top of it. It’s perfect, naked, just the way it was served.Again, we don

What we drank: yuzu mule (alcohol free), eggnog (seasonal)

Lately, we’ve been cogniscient of the amount of alcohol we’re consuming, as we’re out trying something new, most nights of the week. For this reason, we’ve been leaning towards alcohol-free options when we’re dining out. The yuzu mule (alcohol free) didn't leave me wanting for anything more. Bright, fruity and spicy with the ginger beer, it was a delicious, true, way to start brunch.

Same goes for the eggnog, and the strawberry vanilla lemonade, that was the perfect hint of sweet. The alcohol-free cocktails has us excited to come back for a late(r) night cocktail on a future date night.

May is a lively brunch spot, and the food speaks for itself - but every single person we’ve encountered, every time we visited has made us feel at home, like we’re sitting around the table of family and friends. It’s welcoming for your heart, and welcoming for your tastebuds. Well done, May.
